Non-tox Hair and Scalp Treatments For Healthy Hair
I wanted to take a minute to spotlight a few of the hair treatments that I love using in the salon that are all NON-TOX.
As ya’ll might already know, I work in a totally clean air salon, meaning all the products we use are free of toxic chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and we do not do any hair color services. I know what you’re thinking, “but the natural stuff never works as well,” and while I agree with you that that used to be the case, it’s just not anymore. The clean product lines I now use exclusively deliver the most beautiful results and happy healthy hair of any products I’ve worked with. The bonus is they’re also not detrimental to your health or detrimental to the planet in production or when they wash down the drain. That matters to me!
I’ve got these treatments broken down into 4 categories:
Physical Scalp Exfoliators
Hair Strand Detox
Post-wash Scalp Treatments
Post-wash Deep Conditioner
Category 1: Physical Scalp Exfoliators
Innersense True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub
This treatment is meant to be used pre-cleanse. It contains Hawaiian Red Salt which is rich in volcanic clay and minerals to physially remove buildup and impurities on the scalp. The most notable fragrance and cooling sensation comes from peppermint oil, paired with celery seed extract and apple fruit to nourish and stimulate blood flow. To top it off tea tree rounds out the ritual by soothing inflamation and irritation.
*Because this one contains salt and also a strong peppermint/tea tree oil tingle expeirence, I don’t recommend it for those with super sensitive skin or active scalp flair ups.
Reverie Suna Exfoliating Shampoo
Gentle and salt-free, Suna is great for a nurturing scalp re-set anywhere from weekly to monthly depending on your needs. Rhassoul Clay topically exfoliates, removing built up product, sebum, and dead skin cells while Hibiscus flower extract chemically exfoliates. Then an Essential Mineral Complex including Sodium Hyaluronate moisturizes, soothes, and delivers nutrients directly to the scalp.
The clay in this does perform a physical exfoliation but I don’t find it to be aggressive. It is very lightly cooling but again not aggressive and the scent present in this experience is very natural and woodsy, less minty.
Category 2: Hair Strand Detox
This is the first detoxing mask I’ve ever used that I immediately felt the hair condition improve from just one use. This has been a staple for me over the past year in helping my clients combat hard water buildup here in central TX.
Formula includes Charcoal, Kaolin clay, and organic white vinegar to pull buildup to the surface while not disrupting hairs natural hydration. This mask has made a huge difference in my clients who can’t seem to get their hair to accept the hydrating products they’re using.
Natural fragrace is very mild vanilla, charcoal, and sage.
Category 3: Post-wash Scalp Treatments
Reverie Cake Scalp Tonic
Think of this as a skincare serum for your scalp- to be used up to daily. It won’t leave your hair greasy and you’ll find the texture to be nourishing, soft, and refreshing.
Formulated with Swiss Apple stem cells to encourage hair growth and retention, hydrolyzed protein from the white lupine plant for increased circulation (think cell regeneration and collagen production), and Indian Senna and rose to hydrate and sooth.
This product is SUPER gentle and suitable for anyone looking to incorporate more scalp love in their routine daily to weekly. The fragrance is light, with sandalwood and ylang ylang.
Cult + King Tonik
Tingly and super-botanical, Tonik is memorable for everyone who experiences it. This product can be sprayed on damp, towel dried hair after washing to reset pH to a happy place, or on dry hair for a refresh anytime.
Antimicrobial (can help balance yeast over-production), natural exfoliant removes dirt, toxins and DHT in pores, and arnika provides a tingle and promotes blood circulation.
C+K Tonik loves your scalp in every way and your scalp will love it back. Super gentle as long as skin is not broken.
Category 4: Post-Wash Deep Conditioner
Reverie Eros Resurrection Hair Mask
This is the lightest weight hair mask I’ve ever found that truly delivers on it’s promises. Absolutely no residue or weight left behind (in fact, I recommend following up with an additional conditioner if you like a lot of slip or tend to be tangly).
This mask delivers strength with Artichoke leaf extract and panthenol, protecting the cuticle. At the same time Crambe Abssynica oil and babassu oil strengthen and fortify hair from the inside with Omega-6 and Omega-9 and deliver beautiful shine.
This cutie has a really bright, light floral aroma.
Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask
This is probably what you typically think of when you think “hair mask.” It’s super thick (I actually recommend adding water and emulcifying in your hands or applying a little at a time to VERY wet hair), and delivers restorative hydration. The difference is this mask leaves you with hydrating benefits but without that weighted down, sometimes greasy feeling that can come after a deep conditioner.
Conditions and delivers shine with shea butter, tamanu, and coconut oils, then delivers intense hydration that provides structural reinforcement with flax seed and quinoa.
Just like every head of hair, every person’s hair treatment needs are slightly different. I hope this short guide was helpful to introducing my favorites to you and maybe pointing you in the right direction. I use all of these in the salon on my 1.5 and 2 hour haircut appointments. If you want to test one out at your next appointment- just book enough time for some extra love and relaxation.
If you want a one-on-one to talk about what might serve your needs best, you can always book a Virtual Hair Stylist 30 min appointment and I can set you up with a great “hair self-care” routine.
